Introduction to Zentangles
Zentangles are artistic doodles that are created using black ink pens and are meant as a relaxation and/or meditation technique while creating a pleasing design. There are many "tangles" (individual doodle patterns) that are typically used in a Zentangle design. The tangles are weaved together to create a free flowing piece of art.
One of the great things about Zentangling is that you don't have to be a professional artist to create a beautiful design. You start with a "string," which is merely a squiggly line that takes up a designated space on your drawing tablet. If you prefer, you can create words or use rubber stamps to create a basic design, and then fill in the blank spaces with tangles. Either technique will relax the stress away, especially if you Zentangle while listening to soothing music.
I have been Zentangling only since July of 2010, so I'm still considered a novice. I will be posting some of my Zentangles to show you examples of what the art form is all about. I hope you enjoy them. If you study the tangles I have used to create my Zentangle artwork, you will learn the basic tangle designs.
This January design was used as the artwork for the month of January for the Zentangle 2011 calendar I created. I colored in the individual letters in the word so it would stand out from the other patterns. I used colored pencils and Gamsol, which is a blending agent.

Zentangle looks great although it's something I've never heard of it looks to be very creative.I'm looking forward to more of your zenttangles .
Thanks Ben and 4youreyes... Look for more tips and designs in the upcoming weeks. It's a great activity while you're watching TV too. You would be amazed how well it works at reducing stress.
Hmmm.. Interesting! I'm a doodler from way back, but my doodles seem to end up all straight-line geometric patterns.. I wonder about the significance of THAT! LOL
It doesn't matter if the lines are straight or curved--it only matters that it helps you to relieve stress and create a work of art in the process! :o)

Love it, never heard it called a Zentangle before. I made a shirt design for the second Lollapalooza here in Wisconsin years ago. Gave the design to an old friend whom I'm out of touch with, what a loss! I like your encouraging art words!
